Ban McDonald's, says Charles

Looks like the Prince doesn't like his dose of Big Mac's. On a recent trip to the UAE, Prince Charles said, "Have you got anywhere with McDonald's? Have you tried getting it banned? That's the key." I wonder what his approach to solving the alcohol problems in the UK would be? I bet pub owners can't wait for that one! What do you think about McBashing, or junk food bashing in general? Leave your comments!

PRINCE Charles has said banning McDonald's is the "key" to improving health and fitness, while on a visit to a healthy eating program in the Middle East. While on an official tour in the United Arab Emirates, Charles inspected the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi, which was launching a public awareness campaign on nutrition. During the visit, he asked a nutritionist: "Have you got anywhere with McDonald's? Have you tried getting it banned? That's the key." McDonald's has said it is "disappointed" by the prince's comments, which it has called out of date.

A spokesman for the prince later said Charles was not suggesting McDonald's should be banned, but instead was trying to highlight the need for a "balanced diet, especially for children".

"In visiting the diabetes centre today, he was keen to emphasise the need for children to enjoy the widest variety of food and not to eat any particular sort of food to excess."

A McDonald's spokesman has said: "This appears to be an off-the-cuff remark, in our opinion. It does not reflect our menu or where we are as a business."

Earlier this month, McDonald's in Australia won the National Heart Foundation's tick of approval for several low-fat meals that were being added to its menu.

The foundation gave nine meal combinations from the corporation's menu - including McNuggets and the Fillet-o'-Fish if paired with salad and juice - a tick.

The McDonalds spokesman added that other members of the royal family have visited the fast food giant's outlets more recently and "have probably got a more up-to-date picture of us".

In August 2005, Prince Harry was reportedly spotted tucking into a 2-for-1 chicken meal at a McDonalds in Devin, Britain's Press Association has reported.

Choices

The prince made his comment after he and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, watched a group of children choose snacks from a selection of "good" and "bad" options, the Sun has reported.

All the children chose bottles and water and fruit, leaving behind the chocolates and potato crisps, prompting a laugh from the royal couple, the paper has said.

The campaign aims to breed a habit of healthy eating among children in the UAE in the hope they will then teach that habit to their parents.

The prince is a passionate advocate of fresh, natural produce. In the 1990s, he started a farm on his Highgrove Estate that does not use artificial pesticides or fertilisers.

Its brand, Duchy Originals, sells premium organic products in supermarkets, including jams, soups, pasties and pies.

Charles has also often spoken of the need for Britain to embrace its own traditional cuisine.
