Eating Out
The Ram Husky Burger Challenge, U of Washington, Seattle
The ram Husky Burger Challenge consists of a 1lb beef patty burger with all the fixin's. These guys decided to give it a crack after a chat in class. Sounds like a lot of fun, except they didn't quite cook it enough! (and they still did it anyway!)

From: http://students.washington.edu/jbwebb01...

One day, probably during one of the classes we weren't paying attention in, Chris proposed that we should all go to the ram in U-Village and try to eat a Husky Burger, which consists of a 1 lbs. beef patty and all the fixins'. Well, unlike most of our ideas, we actually did this one. Little did we know what lied in store...

THE ram HUSKY BURGER CHALLENGE

UPDATE
Turns out the "Real" Husky Burger Challenge was finishing 3 Husky Burgers and fries in 60 minutes, giving you the meal for free. One of our anonymous readers, who worked there for about 6 years tells how they made the challenge harder by increasing it to 4 burgers instead of 3 because too many people were successfully able to finish the 3! They eventually removed it from the menu completely. For more information, please check out the comments

As you can see, we were slightly shocked by the sheer size of these bad boys... is there such a thing as "beef poisoning"? Initially, we decided this wouldn't be a race to the finish... however, because we are guys and do guy things, it naturally turned into a contest.

While Jeremy and Chris wasted precious time examining and "cutting" their burgers, I raced ahead.

Mmm, raw beef! I think they rushed them just a tad because there were so many.

Trent's was especially bad...

Escherichia coli O157:H7

Chris went for the gusto, declaring that sharp cutting tools were unnecessary for real men. Well, he didn't really say that, but I think he was thinking that.

Trent doesn't look so good...

I, on the other hand, look devilishly handsome, even in my workout clothes and in the middle of gorging myself on a baby cow.

We took some time to watch the occasional sports highlight on TV, of course. For a fleeting second, I felt a connection with these professional athletes, a sort of mental kinship. They had their Super Bowls, their Stanley Cups, their Rose Bowls as an ultimate goal to strive for... I had not throwing up.

Jeremy gave his burger the business.

I was a little full at this point... but I was getting my second wind.

After this, of course.

Almost there...

Kate couldn't watch. As a future "health professional", she felt she had some responsibility concerning our well-being, and made it know that she thought it was "not a good idea" to eat that much food in one sitting. We, however, stoically marched on in our never-ending quest towards obesity.

So she had a beer. Just kidding... it's a non-alcoholic beer.

Mitch had one too, as is his tendency.

Apparently Kate was right, Jeremy appears to have suffered from a mild case of beef poisoning. What a trooper! He quickly recovered and ate 14 meatballs the next day. And we weren't even competing, that was just his lunch.

Random picture of Mitch drinking his milkshake... I had to break up the tension... you know, the tension of who would finish first! Well with regards to that, Trent appeared to be in the lead, with me a close second, Chris a few bites back, and Jeremy lagging behind. But an unlikely dark horse (yes, as opposed to a favored dark horse) made a run at the end and won it.

Congratulations Chris! No one even noticed his sprint at the end and before we knew it, he was finished.

Then Trent and I finished.

While Jeremy attempted to look seductive (a product of the beef poisoning)... and finished.

I finished the entire meal first, including pickle.

Beefy muscles.

Kate was proud!

Then Jeremy finished.

I think beef was coming out of my pores.

Guts... of triumph.

On the way back, Jeremy and Casey created a new game called "push the other guy off the curb or other stuff approximately 6 inches tall".

Jeremy used his newly acquired mass to man-handle Casey. You don't want none Sullivan!

And so ended our odyssey/ascent into madness... I learned so much that day... ate so much that day?

Addendum I: Casey Sullivan, who did not compete in the first Husky Burger contest, completed the task today (October 26, 2002) in 39 minutes. Go get 'em tiger.

Addendum II: Jeremy would like to point out that he puked the night before we did our little contest, so he is not as big of a pansy as it appears.

THE END

Mmmm...one-pounders. And that pink is okay...not as bad as some of those nearly raw burgers in the In-n-Out 100x100 series. I realize now that pictures really are the way to go when chronicling these eating challenges. We did a DOUBLE one-pounder challenge at Fuddruckers a while back and I wish I'd have gotten more pics because even thought it's twice the meat, a write up with only one pic doesn't do the adventure any justice.

That is just one husky burger. The HUSKY CHALLENGE was finishing 3 burgers and fries in 60 minutes. You were given three complete plates like the ones in the pictures.

O-RLY?!?!

Seems like a hefty challenge! I've tried to find "official" documentation on the challenge, but haven't had any luck. Does the place offering the challenge have a web site? Please let me know if you know where to find it!

YA RLY... I worked there for about 6 years when it was still on the menu so I can personally vouch for it. They've taken it off the menus now, but there are faint reminders of it on the interwebs

depending on which ram restaurant (it's a chain) you were at it would be called the Husky or Cougar challenge... I don't know what it was called in the other states. Also, because too many people were successfully doing it they switched it from 3 to 4 burgers, and finally removed it from the menu.

I've put an "UPDATE" at the top of the story about the real challenge, and its removal from the menu.

Thanks for the info!
