White Castle Meat Product Tolerance Marathon Scorebook

Fine traditions of our past shouldn't fall by the wayside.... they should continue, be cherished, and above all else, be respected for what they are. But alas, it seems one fine tradition has met a tragic fate, and will no longer be passed onto future generations. That tradition, once held by the Princeton University Band is the "White Castle Meat Product Tolerance Marathon Scorebook". Running for 16 years, this fine tradition involved consuming as many White Castle "Sliders" as possible in one sitting. History was made, records were broken, tears were shed, royalty was appointed. A shame the tradition no longer lives on ;(

It can get kinda slow during Dead Week, the days between the end of school and the start of Reunions. (Hence the name.) Among the Band's activities is the Annual White Castle® Meat Product Tolerance Competition. After rehearsal one night, we head up Route 1 to White Castle in the hopes of setting new individual and team records for hamburger comsumption.

Although the White Castle marathon isn't an Olympic sport yet, you will find our marathon mentioned in Selling 'Em by the Sack: White Castle and the Creation of American Food (NYU Press, 1998), a scholarly look at the history of White Castle and the American fast-food industry it launched. It also appeared in CMJ New Music Monthly (May 1999).

Rules of the Marathon

The rules of the marathon are pretty simple. You score a point for each White Castle hamburger you eat, so you keep eating until you can't anymore. Then you eat some more. You stop when you've had enough. Some people stop at 0. (Darwin in action.)

All the hamburgers must be consumed within one visit to the White Castle, though brief visits outside for fresh air are OK. Speaking of fresh air, booting doesn't disqualify you, but you can't score more afterwards. (Yeah, like you'd really want to.) By the way, if you bring in food from an outside source without a legitimate reason (i.e., vegetarianism) and eat it, you are liable to be shunned.

Style Points:
Nothing may be removed from the hamburger (except possibly the pickle, if you are allergic to them or don't like them). But you may add to the experience in any number of ways. These enhancements earn style points. For example, the White Castle Cheeseburger, the Bacon Hamburger, and the Surf-and-Turf each earn a style point. So does adding half-an-order of fried clam strips, chicken rings, or fish nibblers to a burger. However, the NCAA Rules Committee has decreed that french fries, milk shakes, onion rings, and donuts are not worth style points. The style points from added items are cumulative: for example, the Bacon Cheeseburger and the Jalapeno Cheeseburger both earn two style points.

Style points can also be earned by consuming the burger in creative ways. For example, you can try a White Castle Chug: cramming the burger into your mouth such that it is entirely inside before any of it is swallowed. A Box Chug is when you chug the burger straight out of the little box it comes in, without ever touching it. Both of these are worth a style point. A Double Chug (chugging two burgers at once) is worth two style points.

If chugging isn't your style, you can try the Two-at-a-Time: two complete hamburgers, consumed together while stacked. You can also try a Three-at-a-Time or more, if you can open your mouth wide enough. In general, an N-at-a-Time is worth N-1 style points (for natural numbers N.) A White Castle Swirl also earns a style point: a Swirl is like an N-at-a-Time, except the burgers are mashed together such that it is not possible to determine that a portion of all the burgers is being consumed with each bite. You get the idea. Perhaps you wish you hadn't.

Other innovations, such as eating burgers while juggling them, are always welcome and will earn loads of style points, as well as general applause and adulation from those present.

Style points don't count toward your regular score, but they are used to break ties.

White Castle Royalty

The reigning Kings of the White Castle are David R. Turner '02 and Erik Williamson '05 with their top scores of 32 points each. David earned his title in 1999 with a stunning upset of Chris "King for Life" Neidre '96. Erik took a share of the crown by tying David's record during the 2002 competition.

The team record is an artery-hardening 582 5/8 points, set by the 2004 team. They became the "Defenders of the Crown" by vanquishing the 2003 team.

Seventeenth Annual Marathon: May 25-26 2004

They did it again. For the third year in a row, the Band thoroughly smashed its own record. The new record is 582 5/8, representing a 28% increase in overall burger consumption from last year. This is more than the 1991 through 1994 teams ate combined. For the first time in over a decade, the competition ended in a tie for King of the Castle. Todd Templeton '04 and Josh Burton '05 each consumed 30 of the little burgers and each earned no style points to distract from their achievement. They are the King and Queen of the Castle (though they won't tell you who's who.)

1990

The winner this year was Bob Mahoney '93. His prize (donated by the kind folks at White Castle) was a 50 gallon drum of pickles. Minus the pickles.
Bob's score (and scores of other competitors) is not available; we think someone may have eaten them.

1988, 1989

The marathon began in 1988 as a simple pre-rehearsal visit to White Castle by then-Drillmasters Ben Berger '90, Ben Kramer '90, Laurie Henneman '90, and Andy Stein '90, along with Drum Major Eliza Kunkel '89. Winners were Andy and Laurie, who tied with 11 points.

Few other scores have survived from those early years, but members still recall that following the first visit, a large number of people at rehearsal asking Andy to "please not stand so close to me." Or, in Andy's own words, as written in an e-mail sent to Band Random in May 2003,

I can't remember exactly how many I ate, but I know it was more than I really wanted and clearly more than common sense said was prudent. I recall that Ben Kramer brought along a grape slurpee from 7-11 which was, in retrospect, a tactical mistake ... At rehearsal that night I was slowly pushed out of the trombone section, and then rejected by every other section throughout the band, not unlike how my ancestors found themselves leaving eastern Europe all those years ago, only without the Cossacks. Finally, I ended up sitting directly behind the conductor. A section unto myself, as it were.
Ah, good times.

By 1991 the event had evolved into the world-class competition it is today.

Tradition "no longer lives on"? We still do that. And it's still foul. And delicious.

Wow, so it does!

Shame there's not more pics on their site though.... all those White Castles would make a mighty fine cardboard White Castle!
