Economic eating at Hometown Buffet

In these tumultuous economic times, one must be mindful of ones wallet, and just how much value one can gain from the local buffet. And that's exactly what Oliver Gettell did, reporting on just how far the humble dollar can stretch at these establishments. I could go one meal a day if it came to the crunch, could you?

From: http://losangeles.metromix.com/restaurants/article/economic-eating-at-hometown/707480/content

Given the shaky economy and the mortgage mess, it would seem the American dream has lost a bit of its luster. But if there's any place that can calm recession woes, restore consumer confidence and promise good value, surely it's the Hometown Buffet. With its comfort-food menu and all-you-can-eat buffet, HTB would seem the perfect restaurant for lean times. The notion of an endless buffet is, after all, an apt metaphor for the American dream. It is a place of opportunity, a land of plenty, a multicultural melting pot where minestrone, enchiladas and kielbasa peacefully coexist under one roof.

$8 brick of cheese fries at LA County Fair
Cheese fries.... the staple entree for most steak restaurants. But have you ever heard of a brick of cheese fries? Those deep fried innovators at the LA Country Fair came up with the idea. Not sure why... perhaps they're easier to stack and sell, or perhaps they'll build a house with them if they don't sell enough... Who knows... but I do know they look DAMN TASTY!!

Burgerzilla! Anchorage, AK, Alaska
[via A Hamburger Today] Burgerzilla! Even the name sounds epic. Apparently there's a giant food-van-kitchen-thing-on-wheels on the corner of Old Seward Highway and 56th Avenue, Anchorage that serves this mammoth burger. What is it you may ask? Well for $20.95 you get a 4lb 5oz burger with double cheese. (3lbs of meat!) Hmm I wonder if they'd show up to a ball game or something... now that would be something! Get in quick though, she's closing down for winter at the end of September!
